Valeria Piro has a PhD in Sociology and methodology of social research obtained at the University of Milan (2015). In the previous years, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the Dept. of Sociology and Business Law at the University of Bologna (2016-2018), and at the Dept. of Philosophy, Sociology, Education and Applied Psychology at the University of Padova (2018-2021), where she was also a member of the group S.L.A.N.G., Slanting Gaze on Social Control, Labour, Racism and Migration.
Her research interests articulate in three main directions. The first research axis, within the labour processes tradition, investigates workforce segmentations according to race, nationality, legal status, age, and gender. The second focus of interest concerns workers’ agency, by investigating everyday conflicts and informal bargaining strategies within workplaces, as well as forms of workers’ mobility power. The third area of interests focuses on processes of unionization, on trade unions strategies in enlarging their membership and innovating their practices, and on emerging forms of labour organizing (i.e., grassroot organizations, forms of community unionism). During the last few years, her research included several industries, and especially migrant-rich sectors (agriculture, meat processing, manufacturing, and services); moreover, she extensively investigated subcontracted and informal labour.
As a member of the SHARE team, she works as postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Milan. In September 2021 she started the qualitative fieldwork in the Netherlands, where she was hosted as visiting scholar at AIAS-HSI in Amsterdam. She is also currently teaching Qualitative research methods at the University of Bologna.E-mail: email@example.com
